How to use the Color Name Finder

Color names rarely match a pixel exactly, so the finder measures the distance between your color and a large dictionary of named colors and returns the nearest match. Distance is computed in color space rather than on raw HEX text, so the suggested name reflects what the color actually looks like, not just similar digits.

  1. 1
    Provide a color

Paste a HEX value or pick a color, or type a name like "teal" to search the other direction.

  2. 2
    See the nearest name

The closest named color is shown along with its official HEX and how near your color is to it.

  3. 3
    Copy the result

Grab the name for a design token or the HEX for your stylesheet.

Frequently asked

Why is the name only the "closest" match?
There are millions of possible colors but only a finite list of names, so most colors fall between named entries. The tool returns the perceptually nearest one.
Where do the color names come from?
They draw on widely used named-color lists, including the CSS/web color keywords and common extended naming sets.
Can I find the HEX for a color name like "salmon"?
Yes — type the name and the tool returns its standard HEX value plus RGB and HSL.
Are CSS named colors and these names the same?
CSS defines 147 keyword colors (like tomato or rebeccapurple); this tool includes those and additional descriptive names for finer matching.
